    • Solving problems/finding solutions with a colleague: this can be anything from mundane things like implementing access rights on a software, or enabling a function on a new tool, to complex challenges like planning a service design flow, implementing a client tracking system or prototyping a new tool. 

    Any time there is a challenge to tackle or problem to solve that requires or includes more than one person, there is an opportunity for collaborative learning to occur.

    Communities of Practice:  

    Communities of practice are “informal” learning situations – there are no “teachers” or “instructors” or “person in charge” instead it is a group of people with a common interest in a topic with varying levels of expertise. Sometimes they are represented as a series of concentric rings – those with a lot of experience and knowledge on the topic are in the centre ring, intermediate level of knowledge in the middle ring, and newcomers will little knowledge and experience in the outer ring.  

    In practice these distinctions are not important, but it can help to visualise the concept. An essential element here is that there can be communication in bother directions between all levels.  

    Online communities often are a good example of communities of practice as are maker spaces. The point is that they operate in a horizontal knowledge sharing and inquiry format.

    Online learning platforms provide an ideal space for creating communities of practice within work environments. They can add a level of professionalism, accountability, and transparency necessary for professional environments in a way that a subreddit, Facebook, or LinkedIn group may not.  

    These communities bring together individuals with similar interests or roles, allowing them to connect, share knowledge, and collaborate on solving real-world challenges.  

    The platform acts as a virtual meeting place where employees can discuss, ask questions, and learn from one another. They can be a wonderful way to foster professional development by allowing and encouraging individuals to learn and develop new skills and interest in a low pressure and informal way. They may provide additional insight into knowledge gaps or skills employees desire to be developed later in more formal ways. 

    Peer Learning and Mentoring:  

    Collaborative learning can be facilitated through peer learning and mentoring programs. Online learning platforms offer features like discussion forums, chat functionalities, and mentorship programs that encourage employees to learn from each other, share expertise, and seek guidance. This can be especially important during the onboarding process or in the case of internal role changes.
